LOL hes coming along! I changed his pose a bit so now hes going to be on top of a hill, instead of in the water. I really wanted to do something with NYs natural habitat. He really is beautiful though, hes all done but not painted.

Haha, either way I would love to see him! Even a WIP shot would be awesome! I love the idea of the water but I know what you mean. I'm still trying to determine how to have my red coyote done.

Haha! I love it! Oh the wonders of taxidermy. Lol! I can't wait to see him all done up. Very excited seeing as he looks like an extraordinary coyote. What I wouldn't give to have a soft mounted black one to pair with Sunny!

Yes! There is! I'm no taxidermist myself, though. I aspire to learn it but unfortunately there's a lack of schools and taxidermists in my state. Some day!

I like black coyotes!! A soft mount would be great! I really wanted a special color to be LS. :)

And honestly i hear that the schools are not worth it..its only..what, 12 weeks, and its thousands of dollars. i think 24k but dont quote me. Its better to save your money and try one on one classes with a taxidermist and start self taught on shoulder mounts and LS!

I do too! They're just absolutely remarkable. :) I don't blame you. I would have my red coyote soft mounted if I didn't think he would be more justified lifesized.

Really? I mean, if anything I would go for a personal one on one but again, I think there's two taxidermy shops in my state. My best friend does taxidermy herself and worked in a shop for a while to learn but she withdrew from taxidermy and keeps away from it mostly so I wouldn't want to bother her. I already know the process considering I've seen a few things mounted already and had a pleasure of poking at Sunny when she was being done but I'm just a little worried about buying all the tools, forms and pelts and completely ruining them. Bahah!

I love LS, honestly i dont care if I dont have any room! Ill hang them from the ceiling tiles LOL!!!

And yeah, thats just my opinion. Other people will have a different one..but its kind of like going into an art class. Sure your going to pass if you do the work, but you also have to have the talent and the drive to make a living off of it.
And I love your coyote, i chuckled at those satellite dishes she has for ears LOL! She could hear everything im sure!!! I love her colors. :)
Ive done a few LS with people, ive even done one on one webcams with people watching me mount something. Its rare i let anyone watch me now that my webcam broke, and i have to use my laptop but if you ever want to see me do anything just let me know. Im not the best, but it works. LOL I know i have to be hands on/visual to learn, so thats the only way i know how to help. Most people dont know where to start and i know it gets frustrating.

I lovelovelovelovelooove the way you mount canine faces
In my opinion if you can mount a canine then you're a good taxidermist.
Most the local guys I know can only do deer
when a canine of any sort comes in its butchered
I'd love to commission you sometime!
You and Leslie are right up there on people to go to haha

Thank you!!!  :) its really all about the cats...it a taxidermist is bad at cats they might as well not be a good taxidermist (so my shop says) xD but I do agree canines seem to be really difficult for people for some reason???

And thank you :) I'm usually always open for commission.

How do you sew them up? Isn't the leather really tough?
Reply
:iconnakomii:
Nakomii Featured By Owner Oct 21, 2013  Hobbyist Artisan Crafter
Its not bad, its kind of like sewing a little bit thicker fabric. Its all soaking wet, so the leather softens up. :)
BUT things like bear have SUCH thick skin...

Gotcha! Okay, I've never sewn anything other than an OLD pelt of something that just tore with each push of the needle...

I'd imagine a bear's skin would be ridiculously thick x.x

I apologize for the necro, but although I haven't started doing taxidermy yet as much as I'd love too, I have worked with thick leather before. Mostly heavy leather clothing that needed repairs. I find thicker sewing needles will hold up nicely, but the needles can be hard to pull through. In those cases, I use needle nose pliers to pull the needle through to the other side :3

I've done that on the few projects that I've done! I've also punched small holes in the leather either with my hole-punch or with an awl and used a leather needle with pliers if needed

Never thought to use a hole punch for anything other than leather that's going to be laced.

Yeah, I just use the smallest setting and depending on the leather it acts like an awl

Hm. I only have single-setting, standard hole punch. Might be why I never thought to use it for anything but lacing.
